Compare a similar line in the film Sex in the City 2. It opens with a wedding between two men, in which a character comments on the events being “a gay wedding.”

At that point the line is used disparagingly—until it becomes ironic as the camera cuts to buff male dancers, an extravagant spread, and Liza Minelli. The joke is that it really is a very gay wedding—but the underlying message is that a “gay wedding” is different than a “regular wedding.” Gay rights activists could have taken issue with this, but none did.

Complaints about the line in The Dilemma stem from the broadening of the term “gay” to mean something awkward or negative—completely apart from any homosexual meaning. The desire not to offend gays is understandable, though there is much irony inherent in the controversy.

According to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, the word “gay” was first used to describe a homosexual male around 1953. For over 500 years—dating back to the fourteenth century—the word meant “happily excited,” or “exuberant” or “merry and lively.” In fact, that is still the primary dictionary definition today.

The homosexual community adopted the word “gay” as their own about fifty years ago, and created a new definition and meaning. American popular culture, rightly or wrongly, has also adopted new definitions of the word—including mildly negative ones that have nothing to do with homosexuality.
